What is the healthiest food we can eat?

Are you one of the millions of people who need to make some changes to your daily diet? So many of us rush through out days, busy with careers, families and other demands and grab food to fight off hunger pangs without taking time to think through smarter, healthier food choices. Instead, we run to garages or grab something from a coffee shop without a second thought to whether we are nourishing our bodies or just filling up on calories. If you've realized it's time to make some serious changes in your diet, good for you! As you revise your food choices, keep in mind the following foods - they are some of the healthiest food choices you can make.

What is the healthiest food we can eat?

Fruits and Vegetables - the more we learn about fruits and vegetables, the more we realize the important nutritional benefits they provide to our bodies. Filled with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and antibiotic properties, certain fruits and vegetables pack such a nutritional wallop they are considered by experts to be the healthiest foods available. Make a daily habit of including these in your diet:

* Bananas - Bananas release their energy slowly into our bodies, helping us stay satisfied longer. They are loaded with potassium to help regulate blood pressure and prevent and relieve cramping muscles. What you may not realize about bananas is they also contain the amino acid tryptophan, which relaxes us. Bananas also provide fibre, which helps regulate our digestive system and keeps things moving smoothly through our intestines.

* Kiwi Fruit - another great source of potassium. These tiny fruits with the fuzzy peel are also filled with antioxidants and high in vitamin C. The Kiwi fruit is one of the most nutritious fruits we can eat.

* Broccoli - Your mother was right- eat your broccoli! Broccoli is loaded with antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and fibre. It is associated with strong anti-cancer properties and improves our mood and our skin.

* Tomatoes - Tomatoes are rich in lycopene -which is a powerful antioxidant, blasting away the free radicals that damage our health and skin. While most vegetables lose some of their nutrients when they are cooked, the lycopene in tomatoes is actually increased during the cooking process.

Proteins - proteins are important for our bodies energy supply and many people get their protein supply from meat. There are non-meat protein sources, which can help avoid the cholesterol associated with red meat protein sources and these include:

* Almonds- In addition to being a great protein source, almonds are filled with bone-builders like calcium, magnesium, manganese and phosphorus. Fibre and Vitamin E contribute to the nutritional punch of these powerful little nuts.

* Beans - Beans are rich in complex carbohydrates, which provide long lasting energy to the body. They are protein rich and loaded with folic acid, copper, zinc, potassium and manganese. Adding beans to your daily diet can help lower your cholesterol by over 25 percent.

These food choices, when added to your daily diet plan, can help to raise nutrient levels in your body and as a result help keep you healthy, energetic and filled with vitality.

How do I stay fit as I get older?

As we age our bodies change. Our body begins to show signs of wear and tear. No matter how advanced medical technology becomes, people will always have to deal with the side effects of aging. The good news is that there are things you can do to help your body stay healthy as you get older. Through many different lifestyle choices and healthy habits you can make sure that you are as healthy as possible as your body ages.

How do I stay fit as I get older?

Preventative Care

One of the most important things for you to do is get routine check ups and preventative care. This includes getting a regular physical, dental checkups, eye exams and any special tests your doctor may recommend.

If you have a family history for a specific health problem then you need to stay on top of that. Get screenings and checks often so that should you develop a condition, you will catch it earlier.

Healthy Lifestyle Habits

There are some things that you may do that are clearly bad for your health. As you age it is more difficult for your body to handle these bad habits. Also the damage you have done to your body with bad habits in the past may catch up with you.

It is never too early to start making healthy lifestyle habits. This includes things like:

- Stop smoking

- Drink alcohol in moderation or not at all

- Avoid dangerous activities

- Practice safe sex

- Socialize and build lasting friendships

- Minimize stress

Some of the things on this list are bad for your health and others will actually help improve your health. For example, the dangers of smoking are widely known. Quitting can help increase your life span and help lower your risk for diseases in the future. Socializing is important because having good relationships is good for your mental health. People who are happy tend to live longer lives. By making good lifestyle choices you can do a lot of good for your health.

Exercise

Exercise is essential to keeping your body healthy. As you age your muscles weaken. By exercising you can help keep your muscles strong and prevent muscle loss. Remember that your heart is a muscle. By doing cardio exercise you can help keep your heart healthy. You should exercise at least 3 times a week for 30 minutes minimum. Make sure your exercise routine includes cardio and strength training. As you get older you should also work on flexibility for the joints.

Diet

What you eat can have a great effect on your body. As you get older your metabolism will slow down, so your body will not be burning as many calories as it once did. If you make no change in your eating habits then you will gain weight.

Not only does your diet effect weight, but your diet also determines the vitamins and minerals that your body gets. You should be eating a well balanced diet that is low in fats and sugars.

Making healthy choices and living a healthy lifestyle is your best defense against aging. You cannot stop the aging process, but you can help make it less harsh on your body. All it takes is being more proactive about your health and you can often prevent many age related health conditions or at least make them something you can manage.

What is your daily fitness routine?

Making time to fit in your weight losing plan may seem daunting even impossible, after all we're all busy working and living right? Well I hate to say this but us humans are really good at making excuses for NOT doing something.

It's actually very simple, if we have enough time to sit in the pub, if we have enough time to sit on our butts in front of the TV, if we have enough time to lay in bed an extra half hour or more - I'm sure you're starting to get my drift here.

What is your daily fitness routine?

No matter what all your daily commitments may be there is always time for a fat-burning, weight-dropping, body-toning routine that'll make a massive difference to your overall quality of life. It takes only a very small amount of your time, so stop making excuses!

It all comes down to a few simple choices;

Home work-out or gym?

The choice is entirely yours and you just need to consider what's best for your lifestyle. You need 20 to 40 minutes or so of quality heart-rate hiking exercise a day, preferably at some time during the morning.

I got to tell you, first thing in the morning is my absolute favorite time and easy to fit in - it's quick, I don't have to concern myself with it again by trying to fit a session in around the evening family time or social life and I'm pumped and energized for the whole of the rest of the day. What more would anybody need?

So you could wake up a little earlier and have yourself a quick work-out at the gym on the way to work, depending of course on whether the gym is conveniently placed close enough for you to be able to do that, or simply do as I do and do it within the comfortable confines of your own home.

Choose a diet that best suits you

Remember now, you need to cut down on your calories but you don't want to be bored with what you're eating and you don't want to end up hungry or end up with no energy, so try a few alternatives until you're comfortable and fully satisfied by your choice.

Drink plenty of water, eat sugarless, wholesome foods and eat regular small meals throughout the day, at least 4 meals spaced out every two to three hours - not large meals once or twice a day, that's just plain wrong.

Have one or two pieces of fruit and a handful of nuts for a healthy between-meal snack.

In summary; just choose the best options for you and you'll find it's easier than you think to be able get yourself into great shape and stay that way. Just focus, set your targets and stick to them. Natural, speedy, and permanent weight loss isn't and has never been about overly complicated dieting systems and /or poisonous diet pills - it's all about simplicity, a bit of will-power and some genuine tried and tested weight loss knowledge.

Is milk good or bad for health?

What is milk? You'd expect this to be a rhetorical question, however to give this article any justice I thought it would be important to give a brief definition (though nearly every human being has tasted milk at least once in their lifetime, I think.)

Milk is an opaque liquid that is produced by cows. If you need a further scientific or linguistic breakdown, then pick up a science book.

Is milk good or bad for health?

We have been told since childhood that milk is very good for us and that it helps build strong bones etc. Though these statements were true at one point in time, they do not hold much truth at present (exception: raw organic milk from grass fed cows - see further below).

Ok, so what has happened to our milk you ask?

Well here goes...

First of all, the cows are not treated very well to say the least, they are contained in excruciating environments and subject to various substances (rBGH, antibiotics).

The purpose of Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH) - a genetically engineered hormone - is to force the cows to produce more milk than their bodies would usually produce. This in itself doesn't sound very acceptable, however it gets worse.

As a result of being regularly injected with rBGH and therefore being forced to produce more milk, the cows become highly susceptible to udder infections (mastitis). This results in an increase in the amount of pus which ends up in the milk we drink. Yes I said PUS. Results show that administering cows with rBGH results in a 79% increase in udder infections (mastitis) and this results in a 19% increase in somatic cell counts (i.e. pus and bacteria in the milk we so readily consume!).

Now if that hasn't put you off wait for this, how do you think this udder infection is treated. That's right, ANTIBIOTICS!!!

Do these antibiotics end up in our milk, you bet!

The use of rBGH stimulates the production of another hormone called Insulin Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1) - approximately 5 times more production of IGF-1. IGF-1 is directly responsible for increasing the amount of milk that is produced.

IGF-1 is responsible for the quick growth of infants (both in humans and cows).

When cow's milk is consumed by non-infants, it can behave as a cancer-accelerator - and no it isn't destroyed by pasteurization (see below).

Next, come in Louis Pasteur. The man behind pasteurisation. Pasteurisation is the process of heating liquids with the purpose of destroying viruses and harmful organisms (e.g. bacteria, molds, yeast etc.)

This process is beneficial if only the bad bacteria were killed. Unfortunately though, the good bacteria (known to most of you as probiotics) is destroyed too as well as the key enzymes that enable most humans to digest milk properly, notably the enzyme lactase which helps digest the milk sugar lactose. Interesting fact: before pasteurisation, milk contains a good amount of vitamin C and Omega 3 fatty acids!

Oh yeah, forgot to tell you that pasteurisation also changes the calcium into an insoluble form that the body can no longer absorb. The amount of phosphorous in milk also blocks this absorption, if it may even happen. Did you know that there is a high correlation between osteoporosis and high milk consumption, wonder why that is?

Broccoli, sardines and nuts contain significant amounts of calcium, so don't worry about not getting your calcium from milk which you won't get either way.

Step in Mr. Homogenisation. Homogenisation is the process of breaking up the fat into smaller sizes so that the fat does not collect at the top of the milk. How is this done? The milk is forced (at high pressure) through small orifices. Why is this done and what implication does this have you may ask. As with pasteurisation, homogenisation extends the shelf-life of milk and also makes it look "nicer" - don't ask - apparently the fat accumulating at the top of unhomogenised milk is somewhat unalluring. Didn't realise people bought milk cos it looked so pretty!

Say goodbye to your arteries, homogenisation allows the enzyme xanthine oxidase (XO) to pass intact into the blood stream. In the blood stream it starts to attack the tissue of the artery walls, which causes lesions that the body tries to heal by laying down a protective layer of cholesterol. End result: scar tissue and plaque with a build up of cholesterol and other fatty deposits.

Okay, now lets talk about what the cows are fed, I promise I'll stop in a bit so you can drink your milk ;)

Most cows are fed grains as opposed to green pastures. This leads to a great imbalance in the fat makeup of the cows and the fatty acid ratios. Grass-fed cows contain a larger amount of omega-3 fatty acids as well as conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) - shown in numerous studies to be beneficial in many aspects of health.

Alternative?

Well you could always have soya milk, though this type of milk is shrouded in yet another set of less favorable studies and evidence, though there are some good arguments for and against soya milk, your choice. Other varieties include rice milk, oat milk, and camel's milk (if you live in the middle-east).

What else can you do? Well you could seek out a raw milk producer that conforms to many of the aforementioned issues, though this shall be extremely difficult due to the current jurisdiction in most countries. You could always use water with your cereals instead, I'm serious :)

If you're adamant about having milk, then I advise organic unhomogenized milk. If you can't get this type, then the next alternative would be organic skimmed milk. Both of which would require most people to take a lactase supplement.
