Yes, it is most definitely possible to get fit and stay in shape solely working out at home!
The pitfalls of this probably go without saying. How easy is it to get distracted at home? Whether it's a good show on TV, kids, or dishes, the list of potential distractions goes on and on. It is highly important to get past these distractions if you want to succeed working out at home. This means possibly creating a workout room away from these distractions. If that isn't an option, try having a spouse or child start to exercise with you. If the distractions are too much for you, you may want to look into that gym membership after all.
There are so many resources at your disposal for a home workout. I'll start with the freebies (exercises that use only your body weight) and then move to the more expensive items that can assist you with your workout. I'm sure I won't hit everything, but you'll get the picture.
FREEBIES
- Pushups: classic, think how many muscles you use for one of these
- Lunges: great all-around leg exercise (can add dumbbells later)
- Air squats: again, can add weight later
- Calf raises: do these on the stairs to kick it up a notch
- Jumping jacks: get the heart rate up in no time
- Mountain climbers
- Ab exercises: so many to choose from including crunches, sit-ups, leg lifts, bicycles, planks, etc.
- Yoga
Now, what part of your body was left out? Very little would be the correct answer. Sure it's not perfect, but you can get a heck of a full body workout with no money right in your own living room. If you do want to take it to the next level and have some extra cash, take at look at these options.
CHEAP
- The Perfect Push-Up: gives an incredible upper body workout
- Jump rope: regular or weighted
- Yoga mat: for yoga yes, but also helpful with many ab exercises
- Dumbbells: can work the arms, but also good for squats and lunges
- Resistance bands: good for both upper and lower body
- Pull-up bar: hooks right in the doorway
- Ab ball: add additional ab exercises to the many you could all ready do
- Step-up platform: great cardio
- Workout DVD's: Biggest Loser, P90X, Insanity, Tae-Bo, Zumba, etc., great way to spice things up
- Fitness books or magazines: often can find specific at home exercises
NOT SO CHEAP
- Full-size bench with bar
- Home gym: the Bow-Flex is probably most popular here but very expensive
- Elliptical: easy on the knees with great cardio
- Treadmill: burn awesome amounts of calories
- Spin bike
Clearly, whether you want to spend no money or loads of money, we can all get by at home. Make sure to keep track of all workouts as you would at a regular gym. The sky is truly the limit. Be creative, switch things up often, and just enjoy not wasting time and money at an over-priced and crowded public gym!
